自然科学における文章の文体（スタイル）は、どのようにして現在のようになったのか。このことを考えるために、目下、王立協会に注目しています。17世紀半ばのイギリスでつくられた学術集団です。
ロンドン王立協会（Royal Society of London）について知るうえで、いくつか重要な文献があります。一つは、同協会が発行している雑誌『Philosophical Transactions』です。誌名に「哲学」という語が入っていることに注目しておきたいと思います。ここで「哲学」とは、元来の広い意味で使われています。つまり、この宇宙や世界について知識を求める学問を指しているわけです。『Philosophical Transactions』とは、会員たちが新たな学問（science）的な発見の情報を交換（transaction）しあう場という次第。そういえば、寺田寅彦も愛読していた雑誌です。
ありがたいことに、近頃、ロンドン王立協会では、同誌の1665年から2005年までのバックナンバーを無料で公開し始めました。これを端から読んでいけば、同協会の活動の様子を垣間見ることができます。
